Due to audio issues during the interview, this overview ofElder K07’s art response does not include her direct quotes.
The drawing reflects key memories of her life, beginning with the Southern California home where she lived with her son and his family. The house is depicted with care, symbolizing its personal significance. The mounds at the bottom represent the rugged terrain she crossed barefoot while carrying her baby son during her escape from North Korea. Elder K07 vividly remembered how her feet were scraped and bloodied during the harrowing journey.
At the center of the drawing is a portrait of her late husband as a young man, based on a cherished photograph she keeps in her current home. You can see it here [link to K07 artifact]. K07 exaggerated his hair to emphasize her memory of its fullness and beauty, while she drew herself smaller, symbolizing her current, older self.
