Elder K03 drew two drawings: one to describe himself before immigration, and one to describe him as he is today.
In the first drawing, he shared his lifelong dream, one he had nurtured since high school: “My dream was that I would have the biggest farm in the world here [in America].” He envisioned a farm with animals, as well as a large orchard and vegetable farm. He described his ideas for innovations and inventions, which were well ahead of their time: “I had these dreams before 1960, dreams that I would manage my farms and orchard with automated machines.”
However, immigrating to the U.S. shifted his priorities. “I had all these dreams till I was 65 years old but I couldn’t accomplish my dreams due to lack of capital.” Raising his children and providing a good education took precedence. Though he didn’t realize his dreams, he said, “It makes me happy to think about them.”
K03 어르신께서는 두 가지 그림을 그리셨습니다. 하나는 이민 전에 자신을 표현한 그림이고, 다른 하나는 현재 자신의 모습을 그린 그림입니다.
첫 번째 그림에서 어르신께서는 고등학교 때부터 품어온 평생의 꿈을 나누셨습니다: “미국에서 세계에서 가장 큰 농장을 갖는 것이 제 꿈이었어요.” 그는 동물들이 있는 농장과 대규모 과수원, 채소밭을 상상했고, 시대를 앞서간 혁신과 발명에 대한 구상도 있었습니다: “1960년 이전에 이미 이런 꿈을 꾸고 있었고, 농장과 과수원을 자동화된 기계로 운영하고 싶었어요.”
하지만 미국으로의 이민은 어르신의 우선순위를 바꿔 놓았습니다. “65세까지 이 꿈을 간직했지만, 자본이 부족해서 이룰 수 없었어요. 자녀들을 키우고 좋은 교육을 제공하는 게 더 중요했죠.” 비록 꿈을 이루지 못하셨지만, 어르신께서는 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다: “그래도 그 꿈을 떠올리면 행복해요.”
