“People usually think about their childhood home or their hometown… They have these thoughts with a sense of nostalgia. Would this be called being ‘homesick’? I don’t have anything like that.
I used to see the Korean flag everywhere Korea and think nothing of it. I left Korea because I hated it. Not the people, but the government and what happened in our family history. But when I find myself tearing up at the sight of the Korean flag now, I realize that I’m still Korean, I didn’t understand that when I was living in Korea.”
“사람들은 보통 어린 시절 살던 집이나 고향을 떠올리면서… 좀 그리워하는 마음으로 생각하잖니. 그걸 ‘homesick’라고 하나? 난 그런 게 없어. 옛날에 한국에 있을 땐 태극기를 아무리 봐도 아무 감정이 없었어. 난 한국이 싫어서 떠난 거야. 사람들 때문이 아니라, 그 당시 정부랑 우리 집안에 있었던 일들 때문에 말이지.
그런데 요즘은… 이상하게 태극기만 봐도 눈물이 나더라. 그걸 보면서 아, 나도 결국 한국 사람이구나… 그걸 이제야 알겠더라고. 한국에 살 땐 몰랐던 거야.”
